ABOUT

I’m Shala, and I’m the proud owner of Virtual Me. (Hi!) My past lives and my current life have just collided, and the result is (lucky you) Virtual Me! In a nutshell, I’m a certified social worker and English teacher; I worked in both fields for years until I had kids. Once my two children were born, I packed it in and stayed home, but I needed to find something to keep me off the streets and out of trouble--I toiled around tutoring for the SAT and pretty much every standardized test you can think of (Ugh. Dare I say it, I even worked for Pearson as an SAT Essay scorer-- when there was such a thing). While home with my kids, I always kept a foot in the education world and have been a staunch public education supporter and immersed in education advocacy in my home state of New York for years. Private tutoring and supporting all things standardized just didn’t sit well with me any longer. I needed to find something else to do. I’ve always had little graphic design side projects going and tried to think of a way to develop that into something-- Boom! My web design business was launched (well, maybe not that quickly, but you get the idea).

As a matter of fact, I’ve designed websites for two of our NYS education powerhouses: NYSAPE and Long Island Opt-Out. And I proudly serve on the steering committee of both organizations. We have this mantra that we always say, “You’re more than a score,” and it dawned on me that there must be a way to show it. There must be a way that kids can demonstrate their passions, skills, and achievements in a way that’s more than a score or a checklist on a piece of paper. What if kids can create their own portfolio websites and use them to show what they’re all about -- with pictures and videos and a place to write about themselves! They can have their own website that they can continually update and share with colleges, potential employers, teachers-- anyone who wants to get an idea of who they are and what they’re about. BUT, it also has to be easy and affordable. Enter Virtual Me. It’s still in the early beta stages, but if the above describes you (or your kid), I’m personally inviting you to give Virtual Me a shot. It’s super easy: choose a template, upload your content, grab a domain name. Done. Easy. Painless. So—are you in?
